The lotus effect refers to the extremely low wettability and high self-cleaning properties of organic surfaces, among them the lotus plant. It has now been possible to reproduce this surface structure artificially. Self-cleaning roof tiles and self-cleaning house paint are among the commercial products that have resulted. The animation shows how the lotus effect works at the scanning microscope level.
