Collision sensors in cars have to react quickly and reliably in order to activate the airbags. The sensor is a tiny chamber-like structure that is supported elastically. Because of inertia, sudden braking causes this structure to move. The movement is transformed into an electrical signal according to the capacitor principle. When a certain limit is exceeded, the electronic system triggers airbag deployment. The animation is part of the CD-ROM ‘Microworlds’.
