Bodies can be influenced by electrical fields. A plastic rod that becomes electrically charged when it is rubbed attracts scraps of paper. The electrical field of the charged rod polarises the paper. Superficial charges are generated on the surface. Because of this polarisation the paper is pulled towards where the electrical field strength is greatest.
