The chemical production of light is called bioluminescence. The cold light that many deep sea creatures produce is generated by symbiosis with bacteria or by their own metabolism. This animation shows various deep sea creatures in all their colourful beauty. An anglerfish shows its long luminescent escal bulb, a viperfish its chin barbels and the photophores on the sides of a school of bristlemouth are recognisable. A spiny dogfish cancels its own shadow with its belly and a hydromedusa colobonema sheds its luminescent tentacle when in danger. Superimposed textual information explains the phenomena.
